Supplemental Information: The DOI Rural Fire Assistance program (2001-2005) is an example of a successful program allowing grants to neighboring community fire departments to enhance local wildfire protection, purchase equipment and train volunteer firefighters specifically for wildland fire. Demonstrated success, as illustrated in the RFA program, could be emulated or reinstated in future planning efforts.
